I have a scar on my right hand. It’s been there for over 40 years. It’s a constant reminder to me of a windy summer day when I was 8 years old growing up in South Carolina. I had built a fort in my backyard out of boards from a large wooden crate. While I was playing inside the fort a gust of wind blew it over on top of me. As I pushed back the boards and pulled myself out of the wreckage my hand raked across an exposed nail creating a two-inch-long gash that bled profusely. To this day, when I look at that scar I can remember the pain, the blood and the fear of that moment… even though it was over 40 years ago. I’m sure everyone reading this has a similar story about a scar on their body. The pain is gone but the scar remains to remind us of the pain.

Now, in Heaven it is said that there is no crying, pain or sorrow (Revelation 21:4). All of Earth’s struggles, defeats, depression and fear are no longer remembered. Humans who inherit this eternal blessing are only aware of constant bliss. Yet, in Heaven there is one single reminder of Earth’s pain and sorrow. It is found in the scars upon Jesus’ body… in his hands, feet and side. Should a time come in the eternal future, 100,000 years from now, that an individual should ask, “Why is it that Jesus gets all the glory and attention here in Heaven?” the reply will be, “Just look at His scars!”

Those scars are a reminder to us, now and throughout eternity, of the great sacrifice He made for us when He was 33 years old… when He was nailed to a rugged cross… when His blood was spilled for the sins of mankind… when He redeemed you and me. Thank God for the scars of Jesus today… you will continue to see them throughout eternity.

Zechariah 13:6

And one shall say unto him, “What are these wounds in thine hands?” Then he shall answer, “Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.”
