With my working gloves on, I was moving around some large rocks from my side yard to a backyard fountain that I was building. I picked up one rock and there beneath it sat a creepy black widow spider. Without hesitation, I reached down and smashed it with my finger… a little black pile of goop was all that remained of the deadly spider. For a moment I thought about how fearful most people are of this particular spider and recalled a few horror stories I’ve heard of people who almost died from its bite. Kind of ironic that such a feared, deadly creature can have its life extinguished so quickly just by smashing it with a finger tip.

FEAR RARELY CONSIDERS SIZE RELATIONSHIPS. A 5 foot tall woman doesn’t think twice about jumping up on a chair to get away from a 2 inch tall mouse. That’s because fear is not rational, and that is why it is one of the greatest tools of the devil to rob a person of their dignity and their faith.

Generally speaking, this is my rationale concerning fear: If “it” is smaller than me, I can defeat it. If “it” is bigger than me, it’s still smaller than God, and God is in me according to 1 John 4:4, so I can defeat it. And, if I can defeat it there is no reason to fear it. Now, that may sound like an arrogant statement to some, but it is only meant as a statement of “confidence and faith”, and that is exactly what a person must have to overcome fear.

Here are a couple of good verses to remember when facing fear:

Luke 10:19
Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and NOTHING shall by any means hurt you.

Psalm 27:1
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
