I was on my regular morning walk on a warm summer day. I stopped at a park bench to sit down for a moment of prayer and to collect my thoughts for the day. Within seconds I found myself under attack from a pesky, irritating, biting fly. I swatted and dodged as the fly harassed me constantly without letting up. When I couldn’t stand it any longer I surrendered my place on the bench to get away from the annoying pest.
As I was walking away, though, the word “Beelzebub” popped up in my mind. I remembered that the name “Beelzebub” (a Bible name for Satan) means “Lord of the Flies.” Realizing that I had just conceded victory to a stupid fly, I headed back to the park bench to regain my territory.
When I sat down the attacks resumed and I sat there swatting at my enemy, slapping my head and back and waving my arms around like a crazed maniac. I’m sure if anyone had seen me that morning they would have suspected I had some type of mental disorder. But it didn’t matter to me what I looked like or what anyone might have thought. I was not going to be beaten by a pesky fly. I stood my ground on that park bench, determined not to surrender this time. After landing quite a few punches I eventually wore the fly down. After several minutes of hand-to-wing combat I overcame my enemy and I saw him buzz off in defeat. Victory had been accomplished. The prayer bench had been reclaimed!
Don’t concede small victories to the enemy of your soul. Stand your ground and fight. Small victories lead to bigger ones!
