On my walk one morning, I was thinking about the scripture where Jesus said he’d separate the sheep from the goats. Out of curiosity, I looked up the word “sheep” and discovered that it comes from the Greek word PROBAINO, which means “walks forward.” I thought that was an interesting concept behind the meaning of the word “sheep.” I did a little more research about the way sheep walk and found the following information:

“Sheep move best on level ground or uphill. Most of their weight is over their back legs making it awkward to move quickly down hill.”

Now, Jesus is called the Good Shepherd, and we are considered His sheep. SHEEP means “walk forward.” The Christian is one who is always moving forward … not looking behind and not going backward. In addition, the Christian moves best on level ground or UPHILL. That’s right … we’re moving FORWARD and UPWARD. We resist the idea of going DOWNHILL because it is awkward. We’re not built for that kind of movement.

If you’re a child of God, be encouraged today by this thought. You are His sheep. He is leading you FORWARD and UPWARD.

“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” – Psalm 23:1
