A stick of butter was sitting out on the counter in our kitchen. I asked my wife, “Did you leave this out on purpose?” She replied, “Yes, I’m sitting it out so it can soften.” The wheels started turning in my head, almost like I’ve never understood the cause and effect relationships associated with heat and cold. I guess you’d call it “revelation” even though it’s all quite elementary. You see, the colder a thing gets the harder it gets. Science tells us that when something gets cold, all of the molecules that compose it bond closer together. When something is heated the molecules pull away from each other and the thing softens. This is true of almost all the major elements on earth, from water to gold…. and, yes, even butter.

This draws me to my thought for today. Why are there so many hard people with hardened hearts all around? It’s simple… THEY ARE COLD. Jesus said, “Because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold” (Matthew 24:12). When love grows cold hearts get hard… it’s just a fact of nature. So, the question is, “Can a hard heart be softened again?” The answer is a definite “YES”……. But, heat will need to be applied.

My Prayer For Today:
“Lord, I don’t want my heart to grow cold. I see the shape the world is in, and I’m grieved by the way people act, but I know I can’t let that “get” to me if I’m going to live a life that’s pleasing to you. I refuse to be hard and cold. But it will take more than just grit and determination to avoid getting cold… it will take the indwelling presence of Your Holy Spirit. As He burns within my heart I know there’s no way I can grow cold. Holy Spirit, BURN IN ME!”

Luke 3:16
John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with FIRE.
