The Christmas story started 9 months before Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, when an angel came to a young girl named Mary and told her that she would become a mother, even though she was a virgin. Mary asked a simple question in response to this announcement, “How can this be since I am a virgin”. In other words, “How will this miracle happen?” The angel answered her with a detailed description of how the miracle will take place when He said, “The Holy Ghost shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you….” There you have it in a nutshell… how a miracle happens… how every miracle happens… not just for Mary, but for you and me also. Just two things need to happen.
FIRST, the Holy Spirit must “come upon” the situation (an empty womb, a diseased body, an insurmountable obstacle, etc.). Yes, something must first happen in the Spirit realm before anything is seen in this fleshly, natural realm. Just because you can’t SEE it yet doesn’t mean it’s not happening. Mary was pregnant the moment that the Holy Spirit came upon her, but it wasn’t until 9 months later that the promised baby boy became VISIBLE for all to see. You think that you haven’t received your miracle just because you haven’t SEEN it yet? Ha!
SECONDLY, the Power of the Most High overshadows the situation. Power is the energy that is emitted from God that makes the miracle happen. Everyone wants to feel the “power” when they pray for a miracle, but it’s so important to remember that “first things must come first”. The Holy Spirit has to “come upon” before the “power” is released.
In the story of Creation we all remember that God SPOKE and said, “Let there be light” and then power was emitted that created the light. But do you remember what was happening before that power went forth… before God spoke? Genesis 1:2 says, “And the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” You see, before the miracle of Creation started, the Holy Spirit “came upon” the situation first!
So, this is just some encouragement to all who are praying for a miracle to happen. Pray for the miracle, then trust and wait for the Holy Spirit to COME UPON the situation to do His work in that unseen realm…that realm where ground work and preparation work is done before the Power is released and the miracle becomes visible for all to see.
