I was sitting at my computer desk, working on an important deadline one day when, from out of nowhere, my teenage son came up behind me and hugged me around my neck. Supposing that to be his way of telling me he needed something from me, I said, “What was that for?” But, he simply replied, “Just because.” When I realized that he was sincere, that he just wanted to do it because he loved me, I stopped what I was doing and said, “I’m taking you to lunch! Where do you want to go?” His release of affection towards me stirred me to do something to reciprocate.

Receiving unexpected (and unrequested) affection from your child is an awesome thing. Sometimes, we get so accustomed to our children coming to us with all their needs that we forget they have something to offer us as well. What a blessing just to have your child “love on you!”

Now, I’m sure God delights in the fact that we come to Him with all of our needs. He’s such a Good Father. Imagine, though, how much it must bless Him when we come to Him, without a single prayer request or need, and simply tell Him that we Love Him and Worship Him. If a father like me, riddled with faults and imperfections, can be blessed and moved to action by the affection of one of my children, HOW MUCH MORE is Father God moved by the expressions of affection and praise from one of His children?

Today, I’d like to suggest that, instead of always going to Father God with your list of wants and needs, that you occasionally go to Him with a simple heart of thanks and gratitude, and just let Him know that you love Him. You might be pleasantly surprised by His response!

Matthew 7:11 (NAS)
“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, HOW MUCH MORE will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!” [Words of Jesus]
