I like to brush up on my Spanish sometimes when I go to my favorite Mexican restaurant. I had already known that “Por Favor” means “Please” but I asked my waiter for the literal translation. I discovered that “Por Favor” means “For Favor”… well, that makes sense, doesn’t it! But, when he said that, a light came on inside me! When I say “Please” (at least in Spanish) I’m asking for someone to show me favor or to do a favor for me.

There are two aspects to Favor that come to mind.

Number One: If you ask someone for a favor you are accepting the fact that you may not really be worthy of the act of kindness that you are requesting. If you believed yourself to be worthy of the request then you would have given an “order” or “command”. I could tell my waiter that I wanted more sweet tea one of two ways: “Bring me more tea” (command), or, “May I have more tea, please” (asking a favor).

Number Two: To ask someone for a favor you are recognizing that, though you may not be worthy of the request, the person’s kindness/goodness might lead them to fulfill your request.

So, when I say “May I have more tea, please,” here’s what I’m saying … “I may not be worthy of you doing something nice for me, but because you are kind and good, would you bring me some more tea.” There’s a point to this, so you don’t have to say that the next time you want your waiter to bring you more tea! HaHa!

The point is this: God’s FAVOR is not dependent on our worthiness … it’s dependent on HIS GOODNESS. No, we might not deserve His favor and blessing, but HE IS GOOD AND KIND! Jesus came to “proclaim the year of the Lord’s FAVOR” Luke 4:19 (NIV). We are in the age of God’s FAVOR because of what Jesus has done. No, we don’t deserve it but, yes, it is available … all we have to do is ASK!

Do yourself a FAVOR and seek the Lord today!

Psalm 30:5
For His anger is but for a moment, His FAVOR is for life.
