Jesus told the disciples, “Wait in Jerusalem until you receive POWER from Heaven,” so they waited, not knowing what the POWER would look like. Perhaps some of them wondered how this POWER would be manifested. Would it be a miracle-working POWER manifested through their hands? Would it be a mind-altering POWER manifested through their brains and minds?
There are a thousand and one ways that God could have demonstrated the power of His Holy Spirit through His disciples. He chose to do it, however, in a way that seems rather strange. The sound of a rushing mighty wind blew through that upper room, cloven tongues of fire appeared above their heads and the POWER was manifested through the disciples TONGUES.
No matter what your belief might be about Acts Chapter 2, the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and speaking in tongues, I think there is one thing that we all can agree upon: GOD WANTS OUR TONGUE! Our tongues (the words they speak) get us in more trouble than all of life’s other vices combined. As a matter of fact, James 3:2 says, “For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.” How can you tell if God really has a hold of a man? It’s simple… just listen to his mouth… his tongue will reveal it.
Proverbs 18:21 says “Death and Life are in the POWER OF THE TONGUE.” You can’t go around speaking DEATH over yourself, your community and your world, and then try to convince me that you have the power of the Holy Spirit… Your tongue is working against you.
If you want power in life, the power that God gives will be manifested and experienced in your tongue. Your tongue will bring life to a dying world and to dying souls.
My Prayer for Today: “Lord, fill me with Your power… I surrender my TONGUE to your Holy Spirit.”
