One winter morning I injured my toe while playing racquetball with some friends. Although I was in quite a bit of pain, I continued to play through to the end of our match. When I got home I went back to my office and started back with my work and regular activities. I guess it was around 6 o’clock that evening that I decided to inspect my toe a little more closely. It had swollen up, the skin was tight and it had turned black and blue on the bottom. I thought to myself, “I think I’ve broken my toe!” I showed it to my wife and she said, “It looks broken to me.” When she said those words I instantly felt faint. When I regained my composure I began to laugh. My wife said, “What are you laughing about?” I said, “Because I just started feeling faint when you said ‘It looks broken to me.’” I was amazed at how my physical body reacted when I heard those words! I hadn’t felt faint the whole time I was enduring the pain in my toe while I played racquetball or while I was working at my desk for several hours, but then just 5 words were spoken and I almost passed out! Don’t tell me that words aren’t powerful!
I’ve heard words before that have empowered me, and encouraged me to press on during a difficult endeavor. I have also heard words that have drained me of my strength and my “will to go on”. Words can be powerful!
I’ve heard words that have made me joyful and glad to be alive. I have also heard words that made me sad and depressed. Words can be powerful!
I’ve heard words that made me want to fight a good fight against my enemy, the devil. I’ve also heard words that caused me to fear and want to raise the white flag of surrender during the battles of life. Words can be powerful!
God created the world by using words. We create our world by using words. Words can be powerful!
